Meet Abby
Abby was interested in a lot of different careers as she grew up, including teaching, writing, singing and event planning. Today she appreciates the fact that her role as Communications Manager for Farm to School Frederick means no two days are the same. She also gets to draw on many different skill sets, including some of the things that interested her when she was younger. One day she might be behind the computer drafting content, whereas the next day she could be out helping with programming or community engagement.
Farm to School (F2S) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on a mission to increase access to locally grown food. They connect youth and families to locally grown fruits & vegetables and provide food education to help individuals make informed food decisions. F2S works in collaboration with local farmers, community organizations, businesses and schools right here in Frederick County. As Communications Manager, Abby helps convey Farm to School’s mission, activities and impact to their audience and stakeholders.
Abby joined SHIFT Work + Play in 2023 because she was drawn to the flexibility and support of the family-friendly model. She enjoys connecting with other members and getting tasks like research and drafting done without the distractions of home.
One of Abby’s goals for 2024 is to participate in more networking and community engagement events and activities. She would like to raise awareness about the variety of fresh food grown here in Frederick County and increase interest in expanding local access.
“I really enjoy the experience of food through the eyes of our youth. Their comments are always a hoot like when they describe broccoli as growing minions. As busy parents trying to balance hectic schedules it is easy to forget that food is a sensory experience for our kids. Every once in a while it is great to just let kids play with their food!”
When she’s not working, Abby can be found chauffeuring her kids to activities, exploring downtown, checking out Frederick’s Breweries (two favorites are Monocacy Brewing Company and RAK Brewing Co.) and, during football season, cheering on the NY Giants!
